Your Questions, Answered
The FILM LAB
-
We welcome participants aged 12 and up.
-
The program is conducted primarily in English, and the final film will be produced in English.
We are a multicultural group, and Portuguese is also used when needed to support understanding and collaboration.
-
The class is intentionally kept small, allowing every student plenty of opportunities to participate in the different aspects of filmmaking, take on creative roles and receive individual guidance.
-
Yes. No previous filmmaking experience is required. The projects are designed to introduce students to filmmaking progressively while allowing more experienced students to take on greater creative responsibility.
-
All the filmmaking equipment needed for the class is provided, so students do not need to purchase a camera or other specialist filmmaking equipment.
Students should bring a laptop or iPad/tablet for writing, taking notes, developing ideas and scripts, doing research, and working on their projects.
-
The type of film created depends on the group’s ideas, interests, and collaboration. Activities and projects are adapted to the participants and the creative process.
-
The Summer Labs are short, intensive filmmaking experiences where participants work together to create a film over a limited period of time.
Film Lab 2026–2027 runs from September to June, with a 90-minute session each week. This longer format gives teens the opportunity to explore film language and filmmaking techniques in greater depth, develop their skills gradually, and experiment with their own creative ideas.
Throughout the year, participants will work collaboratively while also developing their own voice as filmmakers. The program culminates in an individual final film project, giving each participant the opportunity to put their skills and ideas into practice and create a film of their own.
-
The €20 annual fee covers registration and materials used throughout the filmmaking programme. It is paid only once per academic year, so a student continuing through all three projects does not pay it again.
-
Yes, wherever possible. Editing is an important part of learning to make films, so students will be encouraged to edit their own work with guidance and supervision. For the group fiction film, additional support may be provided to bring the final film together.
-
Each student will have had the opportunity to contribute to several films and, during the final project, create a film of their own. The year is designed to give students not only filmmaking skills but also experience in collaboration, storytelling, problem-solving and seeing a creative project through from an initial idea to a finished film.
-
The place in the group is reserved for the student for the duration of the project, so individual missed classes cannot normally be refunded or credited. If Young Filmmakers’ Lab have to cancel a class, we will arrange a make-up class or an appropriate credit/refund.
-
Each project is designed as a complete collaborative experience, so we ask families to think of enrolment as a commitment to the whole project.
If a student decides to leave during a project, please let us know as soon as possible. For monthly payment plans, we ask for one month's notice. For students who have paid the project in full, fees are normally non-refundable once the project has begun.
We understand that exceptional circumstances can arise, such as prolonged illness or significant family circumstances, and we will always try to find a fair solution.
-
That's absolutely fine! The three projects are connected, but each has its own beginning and end. Families can decide at the end of each project whether they would like to continue with the next one.
